With the security printing market valued at $36.6 billion in 2020*, the security printing market is growing steadily and creating both opportunities and challenges within the industry.
Anti-Counterfeit & Currency Expo spoke with Randall, Director of Sales Government and Industry, New-Prolmage, an Agfa Company to get an in-depth view of the evolving challenges, what excites him about the role, and innovative developments he's working on.
Hi Randall, please tell us about your current role. What are your key focus areas and responsibilities?
Work with high security printers and governments in implementing design software to integrate complex layered anti-copy and anti-counterfeiting features into passports, IDs, Visas, tax stamps and vital records. Work with brand owners, package designers, and label designers to integrate high security design print features into general packaging and labels to enable cost effective detection of counterfeiting and other product frauds.
What inspired you to join/start this company?
To enable brands to benefit from TIV (Total Investigative Visibility) on their packaging and labels to detect counterfeiting and fraud the same way as governments are able to do with IDs and secure documents.
What are the key opportunities and challenges your company faces at present?
Fraud and counterfeiting are certainly problems but brands and industry are usually unable to fully grasp the depth and breadth of the threats and risks to their own company. Most senior managers are almost exclusively focussed on growth and crisis situations. They seldom adequately analyse risk, and counterfeiting either doesn’t make the risk list or is near the bottom for consideration.
Are there any innovative technology developments that you are currently working on? Can you tell us about them?
Our copy protected QR code, Authenticate coupled with Arziro, our security graphics design software enables several layers of protection using a customer’s printing capabilities.
What would you say most excites you about your role?
Helping identify and catch fraud.
How do you think the industry will develop within the next five years? Can you tell us about the key trends emerging?
Until very serious visible, measurable losses occur for a major brand either in the marketplace or in the courtroom, things will continue to be ancillary reactions instead of proactive strategic programs.
What do you hope to achieve at the show in November 2018, and what connections do you hope to make?
To see if new people are entering the industry who are willing to seriously make strategic steps in their product security programs.
In one sentence, what has been your greatest achievement to date?
Enabling US state printers to expand their fraud detection and prevention into new areas.
